TAKE 1:

I ran into my old girlfriend at Costco, in the aisle past health and beauty products:
She looked marvelous.
Dressed to the nines.
When she kissed me on each cheek
I saw she’d had face work done
Smelled expensive perfume.
Her cargo cart was pushed by her chauffeur
Boxes of champagne and tubs of filet mignon.
“Roger and I are throwing a party on our estate
Taylor Swift is coming.”

TAKE 2:
I ran into my old girlfriend at Costco, in the aisle past health and beauty products:
Weathered.
Wearing a soiled raincoat.
When I kissed her on the cheek
I saw broken blood vessels
Smelled cigarettes.
Her roller basket
Filled with vodka and whiskey.
“Stan and I are preparing for
Mardi Gras.”

TAKE 3:
I ran into my old girlfriend at Costco, in the aisle past health and beauty products:
Harried.
One child seated in the roller basket
Another in a baby carrier
A third holding her hand.
Boxes of disposable diapers
And sanitary wipes.
“Lucy had to go to the bathroom
and I lost my list.
As usual, Bruce is out of town.”

TAKE 4:
I ran into my old girlfriend at Costco, in the aisle past health and beauty products:
Radiant.
She’d become a nun.
Her heart-shaped face
Framed by her coif.
She gripped my hand
“You changed my life.
When we made love and
I shouted out ‘Jesus’
I found my calling.”
